The murder of Evan S. Warren...by a Wickliffe

I'm still unsure of our relationship, but I recently posted about an interesting story I found about the other Harrison Wickliffe.  I found the story so inspiring & I couldn't wait to find a reason to repost.

Since then, I've been researching his family to see if I could find any ties to our families.  That's when I came across the story of his son, Beatty/Beattie-accused of murdering a man named Evan S. Warren.

I've found several articles in various papers, including the Indianapolis star that mention the story, but none tell what happened in the end.

Apprarently Beatty & Evan had a "showdown" on a railway platform.  One paper stated it was from an earlier altercation where Beatty threatened to "get him" soon.

Both men were armed & both shot & hit the other. Beatty took off running, but later returned, shot & killed Mr. Warren. 

As the above story indicates, Bob Mayho & Flem Murphy held Evan Warren.  This is where the stories differ.  Warren claimed he was unsure if Mayho & Murphy were helping Beatty or trying to keep the peace.  (I haven't found any record that they were ever charged.)

I have no idea what happened in the end, but I do know that the trial needed a special venue for some reason.

This story got really interesting when I started to research Evan Warren.  

He was also involved in a slander case.  Sounds boring, but check out the rest of this story......

This case ended with him apparentely being able to prove he was NOT lawfully married to Luellen Smith.  (See the article on the right of the main one.)

I'm unsure of what happened to Beatty after the trial.  I can't even find any death records for him.  

Does anyone know anything else about Beatty or his family?

Jacob Wickliffe: Died a tragic death

Since I started researching my tree, I have found some pretty strange causes of death, but the death of Jacob Wickliffe was one that stood out from the rest.

I know very little about my two times great uncle. 

He was possibly the 4th child born to my great, great grandparents. However, that's about all that I do know for sure.  

I'm only able to find him in 1 census record for sure, the other records I've found him in, may or may not be him.

The only other records I've been able to find for him are a marriage & death record.

 If you are like I use to be, you can't see or understand what is handwritten here, so let me try to decipher as much as I can.
On a rainy spring day on March 25, 1913, Jacob fell in a pool of water & strangled to death in some weeds.  The cause of death was contributed by epilepsy, but the record does not state that actually did have a seizure.
I just assume that he had a seizure and unfortunately just happen to fall in a pool of water and weeds.
Since backyard swimming pools were not a common feature back then, I also have to assume it was a small pond or barrel used to collect water.

There are several things about this record that bother me though.  Hopefully a real genealogist will read this post & solve the mysteries, but until then, I'm on my own.

1. This record states that his mother is unknown & his father's name was Josh Wickliffe (Who was Josh Wickliffe?)  Which makes since in a way, because his mother would have been dead for over 7 years, so it makes since the informant did not know any of her information.  Especially since the informant was not his wife.
2. Why doesn't the record list his wife as the informant?  I have no clue when his wife, Mary died. ( I have yet to find death info on her.)  However, the record does indicate he was married not widowed.
3. The informant listed is Pink Ross.  To my knowledge, this is not a relative so why is he listed?    I did a little research on Pink & ran into a few brick walls, but did find a Pink/Pickney Ross who lived in the same area at the same time as Jacob,  (As uncommon as I thought this name was though, it was actually pretty popular name back then.) & died in the same area just 6 years later.  
4. Pink did have a grandson named William Wickliffe living with him in 1900,  (According to the census record.) but who's son is he?

This record is full of questions.

Uncle Andy lived a long life, in fact, he out lived all 3 of his wives.

I started organizing his records & came across today as the date he gave to the US draft administrator as his birth date when he register for the World War I draft in 1918.  Several records, including the Social Security index conflict with this month & day.

Uncle Andy could not read or write, but held a number of jobs-coal miner, attendant, shingle maker, truck driver, laborer at a tobacco company & a porter at a bakery.

Take a look at the info I collected so far about my great grand uncle.

Alney McLean-was he my 4 times great grandfather

My 3 times great grandfather, Alney is a huge brick wall for me.

On his death certificate, it states that his father was Lee McLean & his mother was Harriett Silvey Hayden.

I can not find a Lee McLean, but I did run across the name Alney McLean.

Alney McLean started as the surveyor & played a significant part in laying out the town Greenville, where he died.  

He also was a captain in the War of 1812. Which is why McLean County was named after him.

He & his wife Tabitha married & had 10 children.  They did live in Muhlenberg & he did own slaves.  Unfortunately, the slave schedule doesn't name his slaves.

What are the odds that my ancestor was named after a complete stranger?

I know that being named after a president was common back then, but he wasn't president.  He was a judge until his death & he was elected to congress twice, but why would Harriett name her son after him?  If it were just the first names that they share, I probably wouldn't guess he was his father, but I wonder why my ancestor has his first & last name. 

Also, did they call Alney McLean Lee?  

If there are ancestors of Alney McLean out there, who may have knowledge of his slaves, I could really use some help.

Henry Wickliffe-Insane or sick

Henry was the older brother of my Great Grandmother Odie.

Although Henry lived with my great grandmother Lou most of his life, he did spend a few years in Indiana (I think I found him in Warrick, IN in 1920.)& also spent some time in Illinois.

Where did Henry live in Illinois?  

Anna state hospital for the Insane

Yes, a mental institution.  

When I first saw his name on the 1920 census record in a mental institution, my first thought was:

Was he mentally ill?

I did a little research on the ancestry.com message board & I found out that it wasn't just the mentally ill that stayed here.  If a patient had cardiac or stroke related issues, they may have been sent here too.  

It's still makes me curious about why he never married or had children.

Probie Wickliffe-Who was her real father?

How is the father?

Great grandma Probie had 6 sisters that I know of, but are they all father by my Great great grandfather Alfred?
It has been said that Eddie Howard is my Great grandmother's real father & that she was not told until late into her teens.  Her father (Alfred) had a mule that he would ride into "town" & would not return for several days.  
Is this when she was conceived? There are multiple reasons why I don't find this to be true:

• She does resemble my great great grand father Alfred.
• Alfred had a sister named Probia.
• All of the have his last name, but if he & Cordelia were married (which they were in 1888) then they would.

Does anyone know who else is in this picture besides Great Grandma Probie & her mother Cordelia?

The day they wed

For years I wondered why I could not find my grandmother in hardly any record.

Her name was really Mary Bessie Wickliffe.

Now that I see not only the spelling of her REAL name, I see how her mother spelled her name too.

How knew her name was Mary?

When did she drop the Mary & go by Bessie Mae?

Who knows what other records are in Mary Wickliffe/Mary Bessie Wickliffe/Mary Bessie Harrison?

Mont Vanmeter's death

Mont was my Great grandfather's first wife.
The story is that she died of insanity after allegedly hearing her husband & brother had been killed in a mining accident. 
William Render, the husband of Daisy Wickliffe (My great grandfather's sister) was killed.  The death certificate stated he was hit in the head with a slate.
However, if Mont died of insanity, why does her death certificate state she died of exhaustion due to cerebral meningitis?
Also, she was not admitted to the hospital until November 9th.  She would have surely found out her husband was still alive a full 2 weeks later.
The story may or may not be true, however the truth is, upon her death, my Great grandfather met & married my Great grandmother Probie.
